New York City, May 17, 2001 - Manhattan Scientifics (MHTX) announced today that it has extended its investment into haptic (touch) software technology by acquiring Teneo Computing, Inc., a leader in the development of touch-enabled applications for medical simulation and oil and gas exploration. Teneo's staff will join Novint Technologies, Inc., another pioneer in touch software development in which Manhattan is a significant shareholder. Teneo's intellectual property will also be licensed by Manhattan to Novint.
Under the arrangement, it is intended that Teneo's professional application solutions will be integrated with Novint's "e-Touch" software toolkit, creating a suite of software solutions that Manhattan believes will be one of the critical components of the next wave of computing. This combination of companies and technologies is anticipated to create one of the world's leading developers of 3D touch enabled software tools and applications.
The 3D touch software of Novint and Teneo allows people to use their hands in the digital world in the same way that they do in the real world - naturally and intuitively. The technology represents a fundamental change in the way that people use computers, and it has the potential to revolutionize all of computing. A computer user moves a 3D "touch mouse," which in turn controls the movement of the cursor within a three-dimensional environment represented on a computer screen. The cursor moves within that environment in three dimensions. When the cursor touches 3D objects represented onscreen, the software registers this contact and sends forces that simulate touch back to the user through motors in the 3D touch mouse. It is as simple to the user as reaching out and touching their data.
Teneo's founders, Walter Aviles and John Ranta, created the company in 1999 as a spin-off from their work at SensAble Technologies. Teneo collaborated with the Harvard School of Dental Medicine to develop the first digital dental simulator, which uses a haptic interface to provide realistic touch sensations to dental students. This approach represents a significant advance in medical training by precisely quantifying a student's proficiency and enabling certification in various procedures. According to Aviles and Ranta, Teneo's dental prototype has been positively received by dental schools throughout the world. Work has begun on a classroom version of the technology.
Teneo also worked with one of the world's largest oil companies to develop the first haptic petroleum data interpretation application, enabling geoscientists to use their sense of touch as well as sight to interpret complex sub-surface data sets in their search for oil. The addition of touch offers potential productivity enhancements of as much as 1000% for some oil exploration operations. Teneo/Novint are now working with two other major oil companies to extend the benefits of touch interaction to other parts of the oil exploration and reservoir simulation process.
"Teneo is a leader in applying visualization and virtual reality technologies to the challenges of medical simulation and oil exploration," said Marvin Maslow, CEO of Manhattan Scientifics. "These are both substantial markets for touch technology, with strong potential for near term growth. Teneo's success with leaders in these fields demonstrates the real benefits of touch enabled computing."
Maslow continued, "We are excited about the future of this technology. When we reach mass markets - people can reach out and touch people across the net, feel the fabric when shopping online, be fully immersed in realistic gaming experiences. Our hands are the tools with which we interact with the world, and we believe touch will change the nature of all computer use."
Tom Anderson, Novint CEO and inventor of e-Touch software said, "Novint is excited to have Teneo join us. They have delivered proven touch enabled software solutions and can help us drive the adoption and success of e-Touch. The team of Walter Aviles and John Ranta brings great depth of engineering and marketing management experience to Novint."
The specifics of the acquisition were not disclosed. A combination of Manhattan Scientifics equity and cash was used to complete the acquisition.
